Have you ever gone 3/4 of the way through a recruiting process and THEN been asked to undertake Psychometric testing?
“Psychometric WHAT?!” I hear you say!
“There’s no way I’m gonna let them near me with that stuff – I can’t control what they think if I let them do that!”
Well, we’re here to say, that may be actually the whole point of it!
Unfortunately, being human, we are not often aware of all the drivers and aspects of our own behavior and psych tests are a great mechanism for helping us to see these.
In addition to this benefit, and let’s be honest, having the opportunity to identify elements of your behavior you may have been blind to previously is an outstanding starting point, by entering into a process in which an employer is wanting to match a job to a “work style” means the candidate who is successful is more likely to enjoy what they do and stick at it.
Needless to say, if YOU are the candidate who is successful in winning a job in which psych testing formed part of the selection process, the YOU should move to the role with a level of confidence it is actually one that will suit you.
On the other hand, if you win a role by ‘telling ’em what they want to hear’, there is a serious chance you won’t suit the role and accordingly won’t be happy in it – there is only so long you can pretend to be someone you are not.
In any event, we know this is a controversial subject and also many of you may not regard the ability of a psych test used to accurately reflect you. Let’s leave this aside for the moment, however, and presume the test used is one of those ‘better’ tests and that its insights are accurate.
The bottom line is, psych assessments offer a chance to see your raw self, so take a chance and be brave! They may just help you to find the job you have been looking for, as well as learning more about yourself in the process.
