During my final year of high school, one of the English themes we tackled was relationships: needless to say we had to study many texts. Of all these however, it is only John Donne’s immortal phrase that still resonates powerfully for me today…

“No man is an island, entire of itself”

In this post we are talking about the topic of connections – something I think Donne beautifully touches on the importance of in his phrase.

Connections?

So let’s talk about connections and how is it they help you to make it big!

Just as “No man is an island, entire of itself is frequently interpreted that no man lives without influence in some way from other people or without in some way influencing other people, in our businesses and in our careers things are very similar.

Do we not earn money by adding value to other people? Providing things others want to pay for or remunerate us for?

Do we not add value through our work as an employee? Through our contribution as a supplier?

Of course we do!! It is exactly the solving of problems, the adding of value and the provision of solutions or services that makes life easier and better for people and accordingly why they want to pay us.

So what?

What does it all mean and why should you care? Well, what it means is that connecting with people is essential and why you should care is that you won’t be able to deliver your “value” unless you do!!

Needless to say, connecting with people is something you must both develop and structure within your mix of core career and business activities: its as important as your learning and development.
